West Highland Terrier & Scottish Terrier Club’s
“Black & White Dog Show”
Commencing at 10am

The West Highland White Terrier Club and the Scottish Terrier Club would like to welcome you to the Twelfth Black & White Day, this year to be held in conjunction with the 18th Paeroa Highland Games & Tattoo.
The Black & White Day is not only held to celebrate the birth date of the Great Robbie Burns but to celebrate our wonderful “Black & White Dogs” & everything Scottish

THE HISTORY OF THE BLACK & WHITE DAY

Way back in 1992 a member of the Westie Club and owner of both a Westie and a Scottie called Val Summerell, who was then the landlady of the Clendon Family Inn, got together with friend Lorayne Tennet also a member of the Westie Club and thought up the idea of a Black & White Day. They put their idea to both the Westie and Scottie clubs who thought it sounded fabulous and the Black & White Day (or the Robbie Burns Day as it was originally called) was born.

The first time it was held on the 24th of January 1993 at the Clendon Family Inn in Manurewa in the Garden Bar and was really well attended. Well known Staffie Breeder Steve Meredith was the judge for the Westies and he later said it was the best dog day he had ever attended.

Then in 1994 Val had moved out of the area so we moved to the Northcote Tavern Garden Bar, again a wonderful venue a fine day and a super entry. Crowds gathered at the sound of the pipes and it became a popular sight to everybody, not just Westie & Scottie owners.

Then in 1995 & 1996 the show was again held in the Garden Bar at the Northcote Tavern. We had wonderful entries and everybody got into the swing of the Scottish theme, dressing their dogs in Tartan and themselves. The pipers & the haggis & the wee dram were always welcomed and enjoyed by all.
It was then discussed by the committee about the amount of hard work we were all putting into this show being held each year and so it was decided to hold it every alternate year. So in 1998 on the 25th of January we again held our Black & White Show at the Northcote Tavern.

In 2006 we moved the show to February and again had a good entry and it was enjoyed by all, including visitors from the USA and Hawaii.
The Black & White day is always a fun day with no champions allowed and pets are welcomed with open arms. Our Junior Handlers are always fun to watch and the children really enjoy themselves. The Stake classes have always been well attended and the prizes are fabulous. The swirling of the Pipes and the Addressing of the Haggis is always looked forward to with great anticipation, not mentioning the toast in Whisky
We look forward to these days continuing for a long time to come and hope all of you will continue to support your clubs and bring your wonderful little Black & White dogs out for a day of fun and laughter.
